Saffron is the most expensive spice in the world by weight, which also makes it one of the most commonly faked. This guide covers where you can buy saffron in Malaysia, what to check before you pay, and which pack size suits you.

Where can you buy saffron in Malaysia?

Where Good for What to watch
Online marketplaces such as Shopee Comparing sellers, reading customer reviews and getting delivery anywhere in Malaysia Check the seller’s rating and recent reviews, not only the price
Supermarkets and specialty food stores Seeing the pack before you buy Packs are usually small, and the origin and grade are not always on the label
A specialist saffron brand Asking about origin, grade and storage, and getting help after you buy Check that the brand names a registered company and has clear contact details

Buy threads, not powder

With whole threads you can see what you are paying for: the colour, the length and whether the threads are whole. Powder is harder to judge and easier to mix with other ingredients. If a recipe calls for powder, grind the threads yourself just before cooking.

Why Iranian saffron?

Iran grows the large majority of the world’s saffron, mostly in the Khorasan region in the north-east of the country (Foreign Policy, 2026). Iranian saffron is sold in several grades, and the grade tells you which part of the flower you are getting.

What is Super Negin saffron?

Super Negin is a premium Iranian grade. Only the red part of the stigma is kept and the yellow or orange style is removed, so the threads are long, separate and evenly red. Because you are paying only for the red part, a small amount gives strong colour and aroma.

Lower grades can include some yellow or orange style. That is natural and not a sign of fake saffron, but it means less colour and aroma per gram.

Iranian, Spanish or Kashmiri saffron: what is the difference?

Origin What to know
Iran The largest producer in the world. Grades include Super Negin, Negin, Sargol and Pushal. The easiest origin to find in Malaysia.
Spain “Azafrán de La Mancha” has an EU Protected Designation of Origin. Some saffron sold as Spanish is grown elsewhere and only packed in Spain, and Spanish police have broken up groups that relabelled imported saffron as La Mancha (OCCRP). Check the country where it was grown, not only where it was packed.
Kashmir (India) Kashmir saffron has a Geographical Indication tag in India (The Tribune), and its best-known grade is Mongra. Production is small, so it is harder to find.

Each country uses its own grade names. Quality depends more on the grade, the harvest, and how the saffron is dried and stored than on the country alone.

What to check before you pay

  • Clear labelling: the origin, grade, net weight and brand should be on the pack.
  • A real business behind it: a registered company name and a way to contact the seller.
  • Reviews: look at the seller’s rating and recent reviews, including photos from buyers.
  • Price per gram: divide the price by the weight. A price far below the market for the same weight is a warning sign.
  • The threads: a deep red colour and a sweet, floral aroma. Our guide on how to tell real saffron from fake explains simple checks you can do at home, and their limits.

Common mistakes when buying saffron online

  • Choosing on price alone. The cheapest listing is usually a lower grade, or not saffron at all.
  • Buying a pack with no label. Without the origin, grade and net weight, you cannot know what you are paying for.
  • Mistaking safflower for saffron. Safflower petals are cheaper and are sometimes sold as saffron. They are thinner, more orange, and lack saffron’s strong aroma (CulinaryLore).
  • Buying a large amount before trying. Start with a small pack, then buy more once you are happy with it.
  • Skipping the reviews. Recent reviews and buyers’ photos tell you more than advertising photos.

Want to see the difference for yourself? We also sell a 1g bottle of standard-grade Iranian saffron. Try it next to our Super Negin and compare the colour and aroma in the cup.

Buying saffron for a restaurant or business

  • How much to order: track how much you use in a month, then order one to two months’ supply at a time so the saffron stays fresh.
  • Storing it in Malaysia’s heat and humidity: keep saffron in an airtight container in a cool, dark place, away from the stove and steam. Divide a large pack into a few small airtight jars, so the whole stock is not exposed to air each time you open it. Avoid the fridge door, where moisture can build up.
  • Asking for a quote: tell us on WhatsApp how much you need, how often you order and where we should deliver.
